Nintendo hosted a dedicated presentation today detailing the next main installment in the long-running tactical RPG series: Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. Launching September 17 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2, the title introduces a time-manipulation mechanic, four distinct hero paths, and updated combat systems.

Here is a breakdown of everything revealed during the Nintendo Direct.

Story and Structure: Four Paths Across Time.

The narrative begins five years after the “Heroic Games”—a grand tournament held in the Dagdan Empire where the winner is granted a single wish. In the present day, the revived demon God Balor threatens the empire with total destruction, and four key heroes from the tournament have disappeared. Charged by the progenitor god Sothis, players step into the role of the main protagonist.

Using the time-travel abilities of the goddess Fortuna, you can travel back to the era of the Heroic Games to control one of four central figures:

  • Cai: A villager from Ribeira competing to win a wish and save his imprisoned father.
  • Dietrich: A battle-tested survivor seeking new challenges alongside fresh allies after a monster attack.
  • Theodora: A warrior from Saramis leading her retainers to defend her kingdom and restore honor to her goddess.
  • Leda: A musically gifted noble seeking revenge against her father’s killer during the tournament.

Player choice dictates how events unfold, but progress is saved individually across all four routes. Players can travel back through time to switch between stories, allowing all four perspectives to be played in parallel.

Preparing for the Heroic Games

Between tournament matches, players explore the capital city of Dagsion to prepare their squad for upcoming battles. Features available in the hub city include:

  • Arena: Train units to learn new moves or observe opponent matches on tournament days for tactical intel.
  • Shopping Arcade: Buy weapons and tools, or upgrade gear using gathered materials.
  • Temple Row: Volunteer at local temples to earn temporary stat buffs or damage reduction for future engagements.
  • Certification Exams: Test units to unlock new class options.
  • Town Quests & Recruitment: Earn rewards by taking requests from citizens, and recruit new units by offering gifts or sharing meals at local inns.
  • Inns: Rest and pass turns to passively gain experience and materials while unlocking support conversations between party members.

World Map Exploration and Dungeons

Exploration extends outside Dagsion’s walls onto a global map, where movement causes time to pass.

  • World Map Activities: Each of the four main heroes possesses unique abilities on the world map. Players can visit external towns to trade, gather lore, and engage in Skirmish battles.
  • Dungeon Delving: Dungeons scattered across the map yield upgrade materials and treasure. Dungeon enemy encounters shift to turn-based “clashes,” which feature team combo attacks distinct from standard tactical battles.

Combat Mechanics and Classes

Combat retains the series’ classic grid-based, turn-based movement—with blue tiles indicating movement range and red indicating attack range—while expanding on customization and tactical tools:

Class Progression

  • Beginner Classes (5 options): Foundation roles such as Gladiators (weapon specialists), Diviners (magic users), and Ornius Riders (high mobility).
  • Specialty Classes (10+ options): Specialized units like Armored Knights (high defense), Wing Soldiers (obstacle navigation), and Charioteers (linear multi-target strikes).
  • Advanced Classes: High-tier promotions such as heavily armored Cataphracts, spear-wielding Guardians with white magic, and Elephant Riders.

Weaponry and Positioning

The standard weapon triangle and tactical positioning return, emphasizing range control and terrain advantages. New weapon types join standard swords, spears, axes, bows, and magic—including evasion-boosting gauntlets, firearm-styled gauntlets, and lightning-infused blades.

Special Abilities & Rewind Features

  • Combat Arts: Powerful target attacks that consume extra weapon durability.
  • Blaze Arts: Unique hero-specific moves that cost health points to use (e.g., Cai’s area-of-effect fire burst, Dietrich’s teleportation cloak, or Leda’s buff-and-summon musical abilities).
  • Fortuna’s Blessing: The familiar turn-rewind system returns, allowing players to undo individual actions or turns to adjust strategies mid-battle.
