No, this is not a joke as we have seen in the past for April Fool’s Day, this is really happening. I knew Nintendo was working on something big but after the first initial idea of making a The Legend of Zelda movie was dropped it was ironically the perfect time to announce they will in fact make one.

Nintendo Co., Ltd. (HQ: Kyoto Minami-ku; Representative Director and President: Shuntaro Furukawa, “Nintendo” hereafter) today announced that it will develop a live-action film of The Legend of Zelda.

The film will be produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director and Fellow of Nintendo and Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions Inc., who has produced many mega hit films.

And when they say “mega films” they are not using these words lightly, Arad Productions (also known as Arad Animation) is a company that primarily produces Marvel-licensed films separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe but other huge adaptations includes Ghost in the Shell and video games which we are more interested in, such as Uncharted, Infamous, Metal Gear Solid, adding The Legend of Zelda to his list, no seriously if you google it is already on the Wikipedia page!

The film will be produced by Nintendo and Arad Productions Inc., and directed by Wes Ball. The film will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., with more than 50% financed by Nintendo. The theatrical distribution of the film will be done worldwide by Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.

By producing visual contents of Nintendo IP by itself, Nintendo is creating new opportunities to have people from around the world to access the world of entertainment which Nintendo has built, through different means apart from its dedicated game consoles.

But wait, that this means that we will have a land at Universal Studios someday? Well, nothing is certain but this is one of the biggest IP’s after Super Mario Brothers.

By getting deeply involved in the movie production with the aim to put smiles on everyone’s faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and deliver it to as many people as possible.

I’m sure soon we’ll have more details about the film but this arise more questions such as on which story will they focus of the franchise, as we all know Shigeru Miyamoto came up with the idea of The Legend of Zelda from his own childhood adventures and throughout the entire series we have witness amazing stories; however, after The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom we know that Nintendo can change the entire story like completely not focusing on the Triforce at all and given the huge success of both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom it is not certain which path will they choose, we’ll have to wait and see.
