With 20 mainline games, 9 remasters and remakes and 17 spin off, there’s no denying that The Legend of Zelda series is huge.
So today, I’m going to share with you every Legend of Zelda Game that you can play on your Nintendo Switch So Far. Other than Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom that is. This list will hopefully change in the upcoming years.
Yes, I’m talking to you Nintendo we need The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD for the SWITCH please!
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

This game was originally for the Wii and even though it was intended to take full advantage of the Wii’s potential and features it got realized a bit too late, just before Wii U to be precise, which is why not everyone had a chance to experience it.
You can play it on your Nintendo Switch as an enhanced port and I have to say that there is a significant improvement with the motion controls or you can switch back to the regular handheld controls, which wasn’t an option on the original version.
On top of that, Skyward Sword is the first game within the legend of Zelda timeline therefore is a must play if you are planning to learn more about the series.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is available in both Digital and Physical version for your Nintendo Switch.
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

Oddly enough this is the only remake we have for the Nintendo Switch so far because Skyward Sword is technically an HD version or remaster.
Link’s Awakening was originally released for the Game Boy in 1993 and even got a remake for the Game Boy Advance with Link’s Awakening DX which included cool new dungeons and new items.
Now, this beautiful game got the remake it deserved for the Nintendo Switch, developed by Grezzo who you might already be familiar with, if you played Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask 3D remasters for the Nintendo 3ds, yes, they are remasters not remakes, we’ll get into that on a later blog post.
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is available in both Digital and Physical version for your Nintendo Switch.
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition

This is not your traditional Zelda, this is a hack and slash game hance the Warriors word on it’s name. Which adds this game to the Warriors series list, an action game series created by Omega Force.

You probably have heard of Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, One Piece Pirate Warriors or Fire Emblem Warriors.
Hyrule Warriors is such a fun game to play, you get to play as your favorite Legend of Zelda Character within the entire series.

This Zelda game is available Digital Only for the Nintendo Switch.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

Alright, within the same Warriors series and my favorite one is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.
On this game you cannot play as any character within The Legend of Zelda entire series but rather any character from The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. You see, this game takes you back 100 years to see Hyrule before the events of the Great Calamity.

If you are like me and you prefer a good story over just gameplay this is a game for you.
Is a shame this is not within the mainline, well it is but is a temporary timeline or a what if story, if you want to put it that way. Which I will definitely dive in a bit more about that on a later post.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is available in both Digital and Physical but you can also get the Digital Ultimate version that includes the regular game + Expansion Pass, is a bit pricey but totally worth it.
Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda

This is rhythmic action-adventure from Brace Yourself Games, is basically the gameplay of Crypt of the Necrodancer in the setting of The Legend of Zelda, which is super cool and cute.

Is such a fun game but I understand is not for everyone, either way you can get the Regular Digital version or the one that includes the season pass for your Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo Switch Online | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

That is what we have so far in terms of official releases for the Nintendo Switch, so now let’s have a look at the ones included with the Nintendo Switch Online or the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
Nintendo Entertainment System (NES App)

The Legend of Zelda for the NES. Yes, I’m talking about the very first Zelda game ever.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link! UGH such a hard game but so satisfying for me to beat it is also included.

You can play both their regular or SP edition within the Nintendo Entertainment System App on your Switch.
Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES App)

Although there was one release of The Legend of Zelda first game for the SNES, this one is not available to play it since you can play it directly from the NES app instead, therefore the only Zelda game that you can play on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System is The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past.

Game Boy App

The recently two added The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Ages and The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX that I talked about earlier.

Game Boy Advance App

Same thing as the NES and SNES, you cannot play re-releases for the Game Boy Advance, except for The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap which was developed exclusively for the Game Boy Advance.
Keep in mind that the Game Boy Advance App is only included with the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, so is important to double check which membership you have active on your Nintendo Switch Account.

Nintendo 64 App

You can play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask if you have the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, this app is not available if you have the regular Nintendo Switch Online.

If you visit the official Nintendo website you’ll see a very useful price table on which you can find what’s included with the membership and you can even have a look at the differences between the membership types, individual and Family.

I’m currently on the Family membership type, and I have to say that is the cheapest and best option, all you have to do is get 7 more Nintendo Switch users to add them to your current plan. Yes is best to include family but friends can also be consider part of the family.
And let’s be clear here, I’m not trying to sell you the Nintendo Switch Online but to share with you why it works for me. I totally understand that it might not be the same for you.
Why it works for me and why I think is worth it?
- If you have the original consoles and original games, yes, of course is always the best way to get to play each of these games, and you don’t have to pay for the Nintendo Switch Online Membership membership.
- Is possible to play most of the older games on emulators and I know they run way better than the original hardware and even the virtual consoles we just discussed.
Emulation is not itself illegal but you are require to buy the game in order to emulate them legally, so just be careful. But is definitely more of a personal choice.
I would love to get all the original games and consoles but since I’m constantly moving, is not really an option for me right now, so the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack fits like a glove for me, allowing me to play all of these Zelda Games on my Nintendo Switch.
I recently started collecting older games and consoles but I only have the Wii U with The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD so far.
Not sure if that’s ever going to happen specially since we are expecting to hear anything from the rumored Nintendo Switch 2, we’ll have to wait and see.
That’s why, at least for me, is not problem to buy or pay for these games again on the Switch. But I can understand the frustration if you bought the original versions and now having to pay more to get to play them on the Switch, yeah, I do get it.
I feel that Nintendo should’ve come with a creative way to keep your original purchases with a download code or something but by the end of the day is a business, it is what is is.
Let me know in the comments if I missed any the games or which ones are you hoping to get soon for the Nintendo Switch. Thank you all for reading this and I’ll talk to you soon.
