After years of rumours, wishful thinking, and even April Fool’s pranks, it’s finally real — a live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is officially in development.
Nintendo has confirmed the news through a formal press release and social media posts. The film will be co-produced by two industry giants: Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator behind the Zelda franchise, and Avi Arad, the powerhouse producer known for his work on major Marvel films and video game adaptations like Uncharted, Ghost in the Shell, and Metal Gear Solid.
A Blockbuster Collaboration
Here’s what we know so far about the production:
- Producer: Shigeru Miyamoto (Nintendo) & Avi Arad (Arad Productions Inc.)
- Director: Wes Ball, best known for directing The Maze Runner trilogy
- Production: Co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment
- Distribution: Handled worldwide by Sony Pictures
- Ownership: Nintendo is taking a leading role, financing over 50% of the film
Avi Arad’s production company has been involved in many well-known video game and anime adaptations. Now, the Legend of Zelda movie joins his growing list — and yes, it’s already been added to his official filmography.
Nintendo isn’t just licensing the franchise — they’re directly involved in every step of the creative process.

What Story Will the Zelda Movie Follow?
While Nintendo hasn’t revealed which game or timeline the movie will be based on, fans are already speculating. Will it adapt a classic like Ocarina of Time, or follow the tone and worldbuilding of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom? Given Nintendo’s recent storytelling shifts — including a reduced focus on the Triforce — anything is possible.
It’s also unclear whether the movie will follow a single Link and Zelda or merge ideas from various titles. With Zelda’s flexible timeline and lore, the possibilities are endless.
A New Era of Nintendo Entertainment
Following the global success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this announcement confirms Nintendo’s ongoing strategy to expand its entertainment empire beyond gaming. By taking a hands-on approach with its IP, the company aims to reach broader audiences while staying true to its creative roots.
Nintendo stated:
“By getting deeply involved in movie production, we aim to put smiles on people’s faces through entertainment — reaching beyond traditional game consoles.”
Could this mean we’ll one day see a Zelda-themed land at Universal Studios, just like Super Nintendo World? Nothing is confirmed, but this move brings that dream closer to reality.
Final Thoughts
There’s still much we don’t know — the cast, the release date, or the film’s visual style — but one thing is clear: Nintendo is finally bringing Hyrule to the big screen in live action.
Stay tuned, because if history is any indication, Nintendo doesn’t do things halfway.
By producing visual contents of Nintendo IP by itself, Nintendo is creating new opportunities to have people from around the world to access the world of entertainment which Nintendo has built, through different means apart from its dedicated game consoles.
But wait, that this means that we will have a land at Universal Studios someday? Well, nothing is certain but this is one of the biggest IP’s after Super Mario Brothers.
By getting deeply involved in the movie production with the aim to put smiles on everyone’s faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and deliver it to as many people as possible.
I’m sure soon we’ll have more details about the film but this arise more questions such as on which story will they focus of the franchise, as we all know Shigeru Miyamoto came up with the idea of The Legend of Zelda from his own childhood adventures and throughout the entire series we have witness amazing stories; however, after The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom we know that Nintendo can change the entire story like completely not focusing on the Triforce at all and given the huge success of both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom it is not certain which path will they choose, we’ll have to wait and see.
