Just a week before the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 Direct on April 2nd, Nintendo surprised fans with a jam-packed Nintendo Direct on March 27. Speculation suggested we’d be getting a final look at upcoming releases for the current Switch, and sure enough, Nintendo delivered a packed presentation filled with exciting announcements, long-awaited updates, and a few surprises. Here’s a breakdown of everything revealed, along with my personal thoughts on the highlights!

Biggest Highlights & Featured Games

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

I was a bit shocked to see the Metroid Prime 4 trailer so early in the Direct—usually, this kind of reveal happens at the end. But I was beyond impressed by how Metroid Prime 4: Beyond looks. Samus exploring the new planet Viewros was breathtaking, and the world looks vast and full of mystery. I’m not exactly excited about her new psychic powers yet, as it feels a little too Bioshock for my taste, but I’m curious to see why she has them. One thing I was really hoping for was more details on Samus’s new suit, but sadly, there was nothing mentioned. Also, I’m still wondering whether we’ll get a dual release for the OG Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, as they only vaguely mentioned a 2025 launch with no exact month. Still, I’m excited to see more!

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

I’m definitely thrilled that we got a deeper look at Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The new Wild Zones and Battle Zones at night look so interesting, especially with how you can now jump straight into battle without a screen transition—something I’ve wanted for a while. It makes perfect sense given the “Legends” title. The game looks promising, and I’m looking forward to how the night settings affect the gameplay.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion

I wasn’t expecting Marvel Cosmic Invasion, but it looks awesome. The pixel art style reminded me a lot of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, which is such a nostalgic reference. Plus, I love beat ’em ups, so this game is now on my radar. I’m excited to dive into it when it releases, and I think the art style will make it stand out in the Marvel games lineup.

Monument Valley 3

Both Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2 are on my bucket list, and now there’s Monument Valley 3 to add to it! These games have always seemed peaceful and engaging, and I’m excited to see how the new entry will expand on the experience. It’s definitely one I’m keeping an eye on.

Virtual Game Cards: Wait and See

As for the new Virtual Game Cards, I’m not sure what to think yet. I’m cautiously optimistic, but I’ll wait until Nintendo provides more details on the terms. Given the history of the Virtual Console and how digital game purchases were sometimes left in limbo, I’m glad to see Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch Online sticking around—especially with these new game cards carrying over to the Nintendo Switch 2. It gives me some peace of mind knowing we’re not at risk of losing digital purchases in the future. One neat feature is that you can lend these Virtual Game Cards to your family members (up to 8 people) through Nintendo Switch Online, and the system will automatically retrieve the game if it’s not returned within 14 days.

In addition to the featured titles above, the presentation also included montages of more partner-developed games coming to Nintendo Switch, including:

Final Thoughts

Overall, this Nintendo Direct was okay but a bit confusing at times with some of the announcements. From the early look at Metroid Prime 4: Beyond to the Pokémon Legends: Z-A gameplay innovations, there’s a lot to look forward to. I’m excited about the Marvel Cosmic Invasion and Monument Valley 3 as well. As for the Virtual Game Cards, I’m still a bit skeptical, but it’s nice to see Nintendo making moves to preserve our digital libraries across future systems.

What did you think of today’s announcements? Which game are you most excited about? Let me know in the comments!
