Explore the first open-world Mario Kart with up to 24 racers, innovative modes, new characters, and full online support
REDMOND, Wash. — April 17, 2025 – Nintendo has pulled the curtain back on Mario Kart World, the next evolution of the beloved racing series, launching exclusively with the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. The massive reveal came via a dedicated Mario Kart World Direct, showcasing new gameplay, world features, and multiplayer innovations.
To celebrate, a Switch 2 console bundle will be available on launch day, including a download code for the game.
A Seamless, Interconnected World
For the first time, players can drive across a fully connected world, spanning vibrant cities, serene plains, deserts, oceans, and snowy mountains – all linked by driveable roads. Transitions between races happen in real-time, adding a new layer of immersion and strategy.
Game Modes to Fuel Every Kind of Racer
- Grand Prix: Classic four-race cups now feature connected tracks. Race from one course to the next without loading screens – from Mario Bros. Circuit to Crown City and beyond.
- Knockout Tour: A high-stakes mode where racers are eliminated at each checkpoint. Make it to the finish or get left behind!
- Free Roam: Explore at your own pace. Discover scenic spots, complete missions, uncover hidden secrets, or take selfies with the in-game photo tool.
- Battle Mode: Battle it out in returning favorites like Coin Runners and Balloon Battle, now supercharged with larger arenas and more chaos.
New Gameplay Features & Mechanics
- Charge Jump: Leap over obstacles, grind rails, or wall-ride to find secret paths.
- Rewind: Missed a turn? Rewind your vehicle back to safety – but your opponents won’t wait!
- New Items: Wreak havoc with the Coin Shell, Ice Flower, Hammer, and Kamek’s Magic. Classic power-ups like the Feather and Mega Mushroom return too.
More Racers, More Fun
Up to 24 players can now compete in a single race – the largest number in Mario Kart history. Race solo, in split-screen for up to 4 players, locally with 8 friends, or online with drivers from around the world.
With GameChat, use the Switch 2’s built-in mic to chat mid-race or spectate a friend’s race in real time. Until March 31, 2026, GameChat is free to use without a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Characters & Customization
Drive as Mario, Peach, Bowser, or quirky picks like Goomba, Spike, or even a Cow! Unlock special Dash Food items from in-game diners that grant speed boosts and unlock new outfits.
Courses Old and New
- Brand-new tracks: Crown City, Starview Peak, Boo Cinema, and more.
- Remixed classics: Beloved retro tracks reimagined to fit seamlessly into the open world experience.
Accessibility & Extra Features
- Smart Steering, Auto-Accelerate, and Tilt Controls make the game easy to pick up for all ages.
- Time Trials, VS Mode, and Team Races offer customizable ways to play.
- Add a USB camera (sold separately) to show your face in-game while racing.
